Cardamom

Quantity:

Cardamom is one of the most important spices in the world. Essential in Indian curries, dhals, and the spice mixture garam masala. Scandinavians use it liberally in pastries. The leaves emit a wonderful spicy-cinnamon scent when rubbed, hence its use in perfumery. Makes an attractive and fragrant house plant.  Blooms infrequently, however. Grow in rich, moist, well-drained soil in the shade.

Quantity:

This plant is a perennial only until the cats find it, and they proceed to chew on it, roll in it, and have an amorous relationship with it until little is left of it! Give some to your cat and liven up a slow party. Caution: This plant has the same effect on lions and tigers! For humans however, catnip makes a very good sedative tea, much like chamomile.

This great variety of celery produces no stalks, but loads of delicious celery leaves. Much better tasting and more full flavored than regular celery tops. Adds excellent flavor when used in salads, soups, stews, and a tasty, nutritious addition when juicing vegetables.

This spreading plant makes an excellent lawn substitute, and may be cut like grass. Bright green finely-cut leaves with white and yellow daisy-like flowers during summer. Beautiful between pavers. When stepped on it releases a delightful apple scent,. Like German chamomile this plant also makes a good sedative tea.

One of the essential ingredients in the Middle Eastern spice blend za’atar. The leaves of this dense, low growing plant have a delightfully spicy bite. It holds its flavor very well when dried. Used with the other za’atar herbs (Syrian Oregano and Za’atar Rumi) it makes an excellent meat and poultry rub. Also very good mixed with olive oil as a dip for Middle Eastern flat bread. Needs well drained soil. Beautiful bloomer! Very rare!

A very rare plant! Light green, toothed leaves, and small bright yellow hibiscus-like flowers. Said to be an aphrodisiac. Used internally for anxiety, depression, impotence, premature ejaculation, urinary infections, frigidity, and poor appetite...among other things. Easier to grow than, but not as potent as, small leaf damiana (Turnera diffusa).

Echinacea is perhaps the most important of all indigenous American medicinal plants, and very highly regarded in Europe as well. All parts of the plant were used medicinally by the Plains, Kiowa, and Sioux Indians. Used as a general blood purifier and for stimulation of the immune system. Bright reddish-purple daisies appearing from July to September are a beautiful, popular addition to the flower garden.
