The highly regarded migraine cure! A survey in England indicates that eating a few fresh leaves of feverfew a day helps reduce the occurrence and severity of migraine attacks. May also be made into a tea. Pretty green leaves and daisy-like flowers makes this an attractive ornamental too. Feverfew is also thought to be an insect repellant, and can be planted near culinary herbs to deter insect infestation.

The legendary "Elixir of Life" plant is thought to possess fantastic rejuvenating properties! This Asian vine (He-shou-wu) is one of the most widely used tonic herbs in traditional Chinese medicine. Also used in Ayurvedic medicine in India, where it is combined with Gotu Kola to produce a powerful tonic. The roots are used to restore blood, liver and kidneys, and as an aphrodisiac and astringent.

One of the most important herbs in Ayurvedic medicine, gotu kola is known as brahmi, "bringing knowledge of Brahman (Supreme Reality)." Long used medicinally and to aid meditation in India. Said to have restorative action to the cells of the brain! Grows well in shade, spreading rapidly. Nice to toss a few leaves into a salad...for the brain.

Remember those awful horehound drops you were given as a child when you had a cold? Well, here's the culprit. This potent expectorant was first used as a cough remedy in ancient Egyptian times. Horehound is thought to be one of the bitter herbs eaten during Passover. Develops pretty white flowers in the summer. Needs dry, well drained soil.

A very unusual Asian culinary herb! Beautiful 2-3 inch heart-shaped leaves with green, red and cream variegation. The leaves have a cilantro-citrus flavor, with a faint smell of fish sauce. Used fresh on meats and in soups. Very easy to grow, but keep it in a pot, as it is very invasive. Definitely for the experimental!

A very old and traditional English herb with a refreshing aromatic scent, hyssop has a slightly bitter sage-mint flavor which melds well with game meat, stews and fowl. The lovely purple-blue flowers are excellent for attracting bees and butterflies. Hyssopus is the name used by Hippocrates, derived from the Hebrew ezob, "holy herb". This is not the hyssop of the Bible, however, which is Oregano, Syrian.

The famous, ancient dyeplant known for the beautiful color of blue it produces. (Hence the song, "Mood Indigo".) Indigo makes a very pretty, somewhat lacey shrub in the ground or a container. In the 1630’s, Indigo replaced Woad as the main blue dye in Europe, and was a popular cash crop in the southern US in the 1700’s. The plant contains the glucoside indican, which must be oxidized by fermentation to produce the die. Indigo was once used medicinally, but no longer as it is very emetic. Very rare!

May contain some of the same potent, hallucinogenic, tryptamine alkaloids as var. stenophylla, used in an intoxicating snuff by Latin American Indians from the area of the upper Orinoco river. Very rare.

The source of ‘true’ licorice flavoring. Roots are boiled to extract the familiar black substance used in licorice candy. Also used in many commercial laxatives, and as a flavoring agent in beer, soft drinks and tobacco. The main ingredient is glycyrrhizin, a substance 50 times sweeter than sucrose which also has cortisone-like effects. Likes deep, rich, sandy, slightly alkaline soil.
