X
Perennial     3'      Full Sun

One of the most popular fragrances in the world. The heavy, distinctive scent of patchouli was made famous, or infamous, during the hippie generation of the 60's. Also one of the most popular perfumes in the Orient, and especially India. Patchouli is regarded as the strongest plant scent in the world-a fact to which anyone encountering someone wearing it will attest. Leaves are excellent, in small quantity, in potpourris and sachets.

"The herbs arrived this evening and they look as though they are in great shape!

Part Sun      Hardy/Herbaceous      White    M,O     $8.50
A very old medicinal herb. Pellitory is a soothing diuretic used to treat urinary infections and stones. In France, a poultice of fresh leaves is applied over the kidney area to treat cystitis and retention of urine. A very rare plant!
Pepper, Black
(Piper nigrum)  P410
Perennial     1'      Part Sun–Shade      Tender/Evergreen    Cream   C,O   $45.00
This is the true black pepper found in pepper mills throughout the world. One of the oldest know spices, pepper was once so prized it was sold by the individual peppercorn, and once worth its weight in gold. Pepper was the main spice traded along the caravan routes of the east. It was a main reason for early European exploration of sea routes, making it important in the development of modern civilization. Black Pepper is a woody-stemmed climber or creeper with dark green oval leaves. It makes a great houseplant, or a trailing plant in a hanging basket. Vary rare!
Pennyroyal, English
(Mentha pulegium)    P400
Perennial       1'     Full Sun
Part Sun    Hardy/Herbaceous    Purple  F,GC,W!   $4.75
The strong mint-scented leaves of Pennyroyal make an excellent ground cover, spreading like a mint. Pulegium is derived from the Latin pulex, meaning "flea", because pennyroyal is a very effective flea and ant repellant. It is a common ingredient in many flea shampoos for pets. Although pennyroyal has been used in teas and cooking (notably the black pudding of Northern England) for centuries, it is not recommended for internal use. It contains pulegone, a toxic compound notorious for causing abortion, and also leads to irreversible kidney damage. But is smells great between pavers! Pennyroyal can cause allergic reactions, use caution.
Pyrethrum - Out of Stock
(Tanacetum cinerarifolium)    P600
Perennial     1'      Full Sun      Tender/Evergreen      White-Yellow  O,W!     $5.75
One of the safest organic insecticides in use today comes from this plant. The pretty white flowers contain pyrethrins, which act on the nervous systems of most insects, but are harmless to fish, birds and mammals. To make your own pyrethrum spray, just mix 1 tablespoon of ground dried flowers with 1 quart of hot water, let stand until cool and spray on bug-infested plants. Warning: Some people can be allergic to pyrethrum, so use caution.

Named after the Italian province of Tuscany, where it covers the hillsides. A large upright with strong, firm growth. We like to cut a few branches and tie them together to make a rosemary basting brush, which imparts the herbs wonderful flavor to grilled chicken. Drives our dinner guests wild!
Rue / Herb of Grace
(Ruta graveolens)  R300
Perennial     2'      Full Sun      Hardy/Evergreen      Yellow   F,M,O,W!    $4.75
A pretty and aromatic plant with blue-green foliage and lovely yellow flowers. Sometimes used in salad dressing, where its very bitter leaves add body. Used extensively in Mexico for stomach and ear aches. Also called 'Herb of Grace' from the tradition of sprinkling holy water during Mass with a brush made of rue. Rue was also used in 'four thieves vinegar' to protect thieves who plundered bodies of plague victims. Great historical significance! Warning: Use caution handling. Rue can cause allergic reactions and photodermatitis.
